Figures from the Alpine region
Sausage spreads can look back on a long tradition. Sausages used to be spread with cabbage, potatoes or bread due to a lack of meat. Today, more than 60 varieties of sausage spreads are popular specialities.
From Tomme de Savoie to Sbrinz, made from goat or cow milk, or sometimes even mixed, there are over 2,500 different cheeses in the Alpine region. They each undergo varying lengths of maturation and are sometimes flavoured or even better, melted.
Wild thyme, savoury and sage are common ingredients found in many typical spice blends of the Alps. Together with all the other species that have been forgotten, cultivated or even considered weeds, the Alps are a reserve for more than 2,000 edible plants.
